Cross-Curricular
At Irwin Elementary, cross-curricular learning means students make meaningful connections across subjects to deepen understanding and apply learning in real-world ways. Rather than learning skills in isolation, students integrate literacy, math, science, social studies and STEM to investigate questions, solve problems and communicate ideas. This approach builds relevance, engagement and deeper learning at every grade level.
Kindergarten
Students integrate literacy and science through hands-on exploration. They read informational texts while observing weather, plants, motion and the world around them, building early inquiry skills, vocabulary and curiosity.
Grade 1
Students connect reading, writing and math by explaining their thinking using words, numbers and drawings. Learning is reinforced through basic engineering and design challenges that encourage creativity and problem-solving.
Grade 2
Students combine math, science and literacy to collect data, write explanations and solve problems connected to real-world scenarios. They begin to analyze information and communicate findings with increasing clarity.
Grade 3
Students integrate reading to learn, math reasoning and science content through projects that require research, modeling and clear explanation of their thinking.
Grade 4
Students apply cross-content skills by writing about math and science thinking, analyzing informational texts and solving multi-step problems tied to real and relevant contexts.
Grade 5
Students apply cross-content skills by writing about math and science thinking, analyzing informational texts and solving multi-step problems tied to real and relevant contexts.
